Every Mandela Day, Fives Futbol and Totalsports team up for Plant a Ball in order to continue Madiba’s legacy of using sport to initiate change and inspire hope. The Mandela Day Football Giveaway initiative uses the gifting of soccer balls to kick-start growth. Each ball ‘planted’ represents an opportunity for change with immeasurable and unlimited potential.

Together, Totalsports and Fives Futbol distribute soccer balls, with the help of various influencers, to different sporting projects, schools, orphanages and NGOs around the country. And this year the initiative is giving you the opportunity to vote for your favourite charity and influence how many footballs they receive.

Last year over 200 balls were planted across communities in Cape Town and Johannesburg with the help of Chad Saaiman, OG Molefe and Khris Njokwana whilst balls were also sent to Katlego Maboe, Nathan Paulse, Tracey Lange and Nicole Eddy to ‘plant’ themselves.

Central to the initiative is the objective to uplift communities through the distribution of footballs,

Each ball can influence tens of youths and play an integral part in honing life skills and developing key character traits.

Craig Lamb, Head of Business for Totalsports says, “We believe that sport has the power to change lives and we are proud to be a part of this initiative and be in a position to inspire the next generation of young footballers in the community.”
