The Grammy Award winning Band Switchfoot who is set to perform in SA for the first time in August will be supported by two of South Africa’s best alternative bands; Gangs of Ballet in Johannesburg at Carnival City’s Big Top Arena on the 8th of August and The Rescu in Cape Town at GrandWest, Grand Arena on the 11th of August 2012.
Like Switchfoot both local bands are made up of friends who formed a band and then rocketed into the Top Music Charts, where they still remain today.
The Durban-based band Gangs of Ballet’s members Brad Klynsmith (Vocals /Electric Guitar), Jonathan Rich (Keyboard/Synth), Hardus de Beer (Bass Guitar) and Josh Klynsmith (Drums/Vocals) – have combined their various individual tastes and styles to create a sound that is captivatingly fresh. Their music, which boasts a winning combination of their vibrant energy experiments with an eclectic mix of alternative, melodic, anthemic, electronic and dance. After their debut gig opening for aKing in April last year, they released their Debut single, ‘Breaking the Silence’, in September of 2011 that quickly climbed its way up the charts to secure a spot on 5fm’s Top 100 Hottest Hits of 2011. Apart from being playlisted across South Africa Radio Stations, the single can also be heard as the soundtrack for Cell C’s ‘Be’ campaign, currently running on both TV and radio stations nationwide. Gangs of Ballet released their debut self-titled EP in March 2012 and while they may be new to the music scene, its members are far from it. With their combined wealth of talent, experience and creativity, these four Durbanites will share the stage with Switchfoot and are well on their way to making big waves in South Africa.
The Rescu is a rock band. For the trio Mike Vaughan (bass player and front man), Graham Lowndes (guitar) and Nic Smal (drums) the mission is simple: rock the crowd with a big sound from start to finish and have a whole lot of fun doing it – and that’s exactly what they have been doing since 2010. Part of the appeal of watching them live is the raw, stripped down nature of the music and big sound. The self titled debut album was recorded at Heritage Sound Studios by Brendyn Rusti Rossouw. With the band now signed to Sheer music, the album was released in August 2011. The album launch coincided with the video release of ‘I did It For You’, the first single off the album. The video debuted on DSTV channel 324 – MK89 and was placed on high rotation and playlisted across local stations. Since then, the band has performed at South Africa’s biggest annual music festivals, including main stage performances at Rocking the Daisies and Synergy Live. The band has continued in 2012 with extensive radio and TV exposure with the release of the second single ‘Beautiful Life’ The Rescu rolled out the Beautiful Life Tour; an interactive show comprising of synchronized visuals and lights that drew fans into the show and made them part of the music journey. Currently back in the studio working on new tracks for an upcoming album, The Rescu will perform on the main stage at the annual Billabong Pro surfing contest in Jeffrey’s Bay later this month before hitting the stage
with Switchfoot in Cape Town this August – another milestone for one of the hottest alternative rock bands around.
