Recently we had the amazing opportunity to visit the Garden Route Safari Camp, a mere 4 hours drive from the city, just outside Mossel Bay!

This lovely game lodge run by the most welcoming family is nestled between the majestic Langeberg and Outeniqua Mountains close to the unspoilt Indian Ocean, in the heart of the Garden Route. This location makes it one of the most accessible wilderness reserves in the area. The lodge is a mere 10 minutes from the charming coastal town of Mossel Bay and less than an hour away from the well-known town of George. The scenic journey through the region’s well-known winelands and unique topography make the trip part of the experience.

With the Safari Camp as your base, all the first-class, world-renowned tourist attractions of the Garden Route, that are on our doorstep, can be explored and experienced without any hassle.

The Lodge and Safari Camp nestled in a picturesque valley, next to the Matjiespoort River, at an elevation of as little as 40 meters above sea level. The highest point on the reserve is 188 meters above sea level. We were lucky enough to watch the sunrise from this point on one of our incredible game drive experiences while enjoying a coffee and homemade rusk.

Accommodation is in luxury tents with thatch roofs and wooden decks. Each luxury tent offers accommodation for two people. You can choose between a luxurious double room (one king-size bed) and a comfortable twin room (two separate ¾ beds). The tent has a private deck from where you can enjoy the breathtaking views over the reserve. The setting of these luxury tents is ideal for couples on a romantic break-away. How fantastic to spend time together, away from the daily rush, sitting on your private deck, overlooking the wilderness. We were even lucky enough to have a visit from some zebra and nyala while we sipped champagne on the deck.

Each luxury tent has a cupboard with hanging space and shelves, a luggage rack, a standing mirror, and a desk with a torch. There is also a coffee station, equipped with an electrical kettle and freshly ground coffee. The reading lamp next to the bed is useful for catching up on some reading after a lazy day of safari drives and relaxation. In winter they supply electric blankets and a heater and there is a ceiling fan for those hot summer days in the bush! Also enjoy a romantic outside shower where you will be enticed by the aroma of the bush and the beauty of nature.

The reserve has a large dam that is situated near the lodge. You might be lucky enough to see buck, zebra and even some birdlife while you enjoy a meal on the restaurant deck.

When it comes to food and wine, you will not be disappointed. Breakfast includes freshly baked treats such as scones and muffins and an edible display of fruit and other goodies followed by a hot breakfast. There is also a coffee and tea station available to guests at all times. We enjoyed delectable dinners each night including a soup starter, main and dessert. Most notable was the chicken korma prepared by their in-house chef.

On our two memorable game drives, led by Stefan, we were lucky enough to see ostrich, giraffe, various buck species including eland and nyala, lions, zebra, wildebeest among other wildlife.

As far as plant species are concerned, more than 75 plant species have been recorded in all three vegetation types. Our very knowledgeable ranger pointed out a plethora of these as well as many rare birds of about 185 different bird species that have been recorded on the reserve to date. Stefan truly has a wealth of knowledge!
