South Hill Vineyards, a member of Cape Country Routes, is nestled deep in the Elgin Valley in Grabouw. This cool climate gem is an all-rounder for wine lovers looking to breakaway.
Owned by ultra-hospitable husband and wife duo – Kevin and Sandy King, the boutique wine farm is home to a stunning guesthouse (the perfect self-catering accommodation for couples, families or friends looking to host an event), they also have a function venue and lovely restaurant which doubles up as an art gallery.
The farm’s location makes it a wonderful pitstop on your way to or from Hermanus or Cape Town.

We experienced an immaculate stay at the self-catering guest house which includes a fully equipped kitchen, entertainment area with a gorgeous fireplace, for the wintery nights, and a sparkling pool amid lush green lawn for summer picnics and dips.

We were delighted by a private tasting of South Hill wines under the stewardship of the winemaker Sean Skibbe, who has been leading the charge since South Hill’s maiden vintage in 2006. The farm has two ranges: The South Hill and Kevin King. Skibbe graciously came down to the Guest House with the entire flight to talk through each of their wines.

These were our Top 3:
- South Hill Sauvignon Blanc 2021 – Wineglass rating 4.5
Not usually ones for a ‘SAVVY B’, we couldn’t help but love this cool climate Sauvignon Blanc. Beautifully crisp and well balanced this Sauvignon Blanc is the kind that will keep anyone coming back for more.
- Kevin King BBK Malbec 2016 – Wineglass rating 4.5
Named after Kevin and Sandy’s youngest son, Benjamin Barry King ‘BBK’, this juicy, fruit driven full-bodied Malbec (with notes of apricot and plum) makes for a delectable pairing with your favourite hearty meat dish.
- South Hill Rosé 2020 – Wineglass rating 5
Easy drinking with notes of strawberry and cherry on the nose, this Rosé makes you want to be sipping it at the beautiful pool at the Guest House in the middle of Summer but tasted just as good with the fire going!
Sean mentioned that the 2021 vintage is ready to be bottled and released soon.
