If you are looking for a serene and picturesque place to rejuvenate your mind, body and soul Rusty Gate Mountain Retreat is the perfect place. Off the beaten track, high up in the Overberg mountains lies this stunning retreat. Expect rolling mountain views and the sounds of waterfalls, birds and wind rustling through the leaves of the gorgeous trees and bushes that cover the hills.
Rusty Gate truly is a Retreat, nestled in the Riviersonderend Mountains with unsurpassed vistas over the Helderstroom valley and Overberg area it’s the perfect place to escape city life for a few days. Rusty Gate offers so many activities for young and old. Take your yoga mat for a morning session with a view, lie in a hammock reading a book or enjoy a braai on the covered patio with friends or family.
The property, spanning 290 hectares, lies adjacent to the Riviersonderend Nature Reserve, abounds with fynbos and proteas and offers ample hiking routes for nature lovers to enjoy. When we visited, we hiked the waterfall trail which is about 4km in total and offers the perfect pitstop halfway to the end: a breathtaking waterfall! Rusty Gate also offers amazing bird watching, fishing, mountain biking, swimming, and water activities including canoes for paddling in the gorgeous recreational dam. They even have a “foefie-slide” (zipline) for the less faint-hearted! We can’t wait to return in the Summer to try out some of these activities.
Our self-catering cottage, the Jacana, comprised of beautiful modern furnishings and was equipped with everything we needed from electric blankets for the icy evenings, a fireplace with ample wood, a dishwasher and everything in-between. They truly thought of everything right down to non-stick pans and garden sheers for hikers hoping to take a bouquet of proteas home with them.
Less than 120km from Cape Town International Airport this special getaway is conveniently situated midway between Greyton and Villiersdorp. If you happen to be there on a Weekend like we were, a drive to Greyton for a coffee and some shopping at the Saturday market is a must-do!
Rusty Gate’s accommodation aims to suit the needs of couples, families and larger groups. The country-style self-catering accommodation offers 5 cottages that sleep between 4 and 6 people as well as a special communal entertainment unit (Eagles Eyrie) that sleeps 20 people with the necessary facilities to host large gatherings. You can put your feet up at one of the cottages, opt to connect with friends or family at Eagles Eyrie or book the entire venue for a wedding or birthday celebration.
Eagles Eyrie also offers an amazing infinity splash pool overlooking the cottages and mountains, a spectacularly insta-worthy swing as well as a bonfire pit to gather around and converse in a day spent enjoying the vast lands and various activities.
