Upon arrival at The Blue Sky Guesthouse, we were greeted by purrs (coming from the resident kitty who met us at the car) and the sounds of Creedence Clearwater Revival coming from inside. Two of my favourite things- so I knew I was home for the night.
Owned and managed by a lovely, friendly couple: Ade and Jill Penny, the guesthouse- in the quaint, tranquil village of Arniston- is only 450m from the beach and historical fishing harbour it’s much known for.
A perfect escape for those looking to get away from Cape Town being only a mere 2.5 hours drive from home. With a perfect coastline, dunes and not much to do but relax, take in the beauty and enjoy some time off- Arniston is the perfect hideaway.
At night the Blue Sky Guesthouse comes alive and turns into a buzzing restaurant which comes highly recommended. The meals are a la Carte or table d’Hote and prepared by trained chef Andrew Read- whose main flavour influences are from Mexico, Morocco, India and Asia. He prepares generous and hearty dishes with taste being foremost over complicated styles and components.
The following morning we rose early to enjoy the wonderful buffet breakfast- which is included in the room rate- with everything you need from cereals, yoghurt, seeds, cheeses, baked goods and fruit to eggs made 3 ways served with 2 options of sausage, bacon, toast and tomato.
After we were delightfully satisfied, we took a dip in the pool and a lie in the hammocks before checking out.
We made our way down to the beach in search of the well known cave. Waenhuiskrans means wagon house cave, big enough to house a wagon and oxen. It is recommended that one be in and out by 11am as that is when the tide rises and you may have difficulty getting back.
A breathtaking site and well worth the walk. If you go along the bottom of the beach- all along the way you will find crystal-clear turquoise water and pristine white sand dotted with rock pools to explore.
