“A fashion picture is a portrait, just as a portrait is a fashion picture.” – Irving Penn, 1950

Irving Penn’s quote serves as a starting point to explore the portraits of South African photographer Ross Garrett. A simple concept underlies the photographs in this exhibition: they are about people and image making. They also reflect the diverse relationships that occur between a photographer and his subjects. The portraits range in expression; while one may reflect a vulnerable intimacy another reveals a striking, constructed mask. Through a selection of candid reportage-style portraits, as well as a series of images from test shoots and fashion spreads, Ross Garrett’s exhibition is a personal exploration of the debatable boundaries between fine art and fashion photography.
