“A garden was one of the few things in prison that one could control. To plant a seed, watch it grow, to tend it and then harvest it, offered a simple but enduring satisfaction. The sense of being the custodian of this small patch of earth offered a taste of freedom.”– Nelson Mandela.

What a wonderful way to spend your Mandela Day, with free entry to all visitors is at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, ranked as the international garden of the year 2015.

Though entry to the public is free, a donation of sanitary pads or toiletries will be requested as donations in return – Kirstenbosch’s contribution for Mandela Day is to donate these items to the aid of underprivileged school girls.
