Today sees the official release of the brand new EP by Cape Tnown’s SAMA nominated act, MIX N BLEND in collaboration with SFRMix n Blend & SFR have got together to bring you the ‘MOTHER CITY EP’ featuring four tracks with vocals from The Ruffest/Chronic Clan and Bonj. The EP is available for free download from their SoundCloud page.

In an age of the over-hype and the mass-manufacture of sound-alike sounds and copycat stylism in a bid for fleeting fame, Mix n Blendremain the authoritative groove of sonic originality. The Mother City EP was recorded in June last year at Heypapalegend studios in Cape Town and Mix n Blend & SFR set out to make an EP that references Kwaito and local flavours, but also melds it with sounds from overseas. Their aim with the EP was to try and take a local sound in a new and interesting direction and base it on themes like togetherness, looking forward and positivity.

“That’s always the biggest inspiration for us: Putting people into situations where they have to come up with something on the fly, something that can only come from them. Its an EP about people coming together from different backgrounds and working together in Cape Town.”

The full Mix n Blend band has been playing together since June 2010 and consists of nine members of some of SA’s most renowned artists such as EJ Von Lyrik on vocals, Crosby Bolani on vocals, Callum McDonald on guitar, Lee Thomson on synth and trumpet, Ross McDonald on trombone, Jonathan Arnold on samples and tenor saxophone, Kevin RIbbans on beats and effects, Inka Kendzia on visuals and Sean Ou Tim on drums. The band differs from the well-known two piece (consisting of Jonathan Arnold and Kevin Ribbans) in the sense that it features original music consisting of 100% of their own compositions, live instrumentation, on the fly electronic composition and effects, live drums and live vocals with a visual show to go with it.

Mother City EP Track List:

1.Mix n Blend & SFR – Mother City feat. The Ruffest, Crosby Bolani, Zoro
2.Mix n Blend & SFR – Woza
3. Mix n Blend & SFR – Lost in Music feat. Bonj Mpanza from the band ‘The City’
4. Mix n Blend & SFR – Another Killer feat. The Ruffest

“The Mother City EP can be described as ‘Kwaito and Ragga vocal influences meet bass heavy UK influenced 128 bpm flavours.’ We think it managed to mash a bunch of different genres and sounds together in new and interesting ways, and hopefully bring something new sound-wise out of the collaboration. Definitely one of the funnest times we’ve ever had working on a bunch of tracks.”
