SAMA nominated instrumental-rock band – KIDOFDOOM – who prevailed over South Africa’s stages from 2005 until their last show in 2011 – returns to fans across the country this June for a reunion tour.

The band, currently consisting of Richard Brokensha, Ryk Benade, Matthieu Auriacombe and Johan Auriacombe, are excited to be touring South Africa again after they laid down the axes after their last show at Kirstenbosch in 2011. They missed playing and making music together and thus came up with the idea of a reunion tour.

They have been working on set lists and dusting off old tracks which have not been played in a very long time – not even on their last album launch tour. Their sets on their nationwide tour will comprise of a good balance between their first and second album, including unreleased tracks.

“Fans can look forward to loud and energetic shows accompanied by a celebration of lights. It will be a nostalgic couple of shows but we are most excited to see all our friends from all over the country.

This tour is proudly sponsored by Red Heart Rum, Ja?germeister, MK and Music Connection.

KIDOFDOOM began their stage career in late 2005 but were first recognized through the disco-punk and indie-dance scene which exploded across South Africa in early 2006. They released their self-titled debut album in October 2007, and from there the band was able to find its place into the main stream armed with a strong following giving them recognition and headlining slots at festivals such as Oppikoppi, Ramfest, Vortex, Woodstock and Earthdance.

Using the typical rock set up of a drummer, a bass player and two guitarists to create music that is atypical of rock, KIDOFDOOM on the surface appears to be a text book example of a post-rock band, but have seemingly evolved the genre into what they call ‘deep-space-champion-pop’. Adding synths, a theremin and the unusual absence of vocals to the mix, applies a completely different aesthetic to the genre giving KIDOFDOOM the standout show that few bands can provide.

In October 2009, the band released their critically acclaimed second album – My Faith In War, which earned them a SAMA nomination for ‘Best Instrumental Album’ in 2010. After they toured the album, they decided to take a break and focus on their personal lives and individual careers outside the band.

Visitors to the V&A Waterfront can expect added high street fashion, variety and international flair with the opening of the much anticipated Top Shop/ Top Man and Tommy Hilfiger this month.

These international brands come as part of the extensive retail expansion currently underway at the V&A Waterfront. Both are a first for the Western Cape.

‘’Our consumer is a discerning one, and these brands are a strong differentiator for us, ‘’ said Alex Kabalin, Retail Executive, V&A Waterfront. He continues, ‘’this is a premier shopping destination, and we look for customisation of brands in order to differentiate our offering. Bigger is not necessarily always better.’’

The opening of these two international brands forms part of a long term retail strategy that has been in play for more than two years.

This strategy includes a strong focus on creating retail adjacencies. Visitors will discover a carefully selected and managed mix of local, independent and international retailers. The offering has not only been expanded but also carefully grouped for convenience. This increases consumer awareness and raises competition between retailers. ‘’A knock on effect of this is an increase in standards, which in turn impacts on the consumer experience. This is evidenced in the home ware section on the ground floor of Victoria Wharf, and features @Home, Entrepo, Fellowes Interiors, Woolworth Home and Above Rubies, ‘’ said Kabalin.

Keeping adjacencies is mind, it is often necessary to keep space vacant, or to develop it for the right tenant or brand.

This was the case with Top Shop and other new arrival, Call it Spring. Development work was necessary to create the desired and required space for the brands, and build a bigger and better space for Mango.

‘’We have welcomed a number of new brands, and this will continue throughout 2013. Joining us in May are Sweets from Heaven and @Home Living Space and in August, we will welcome Mamas and Papas and Cotton On Kids, ‘’ said Kabalin.

As development work continues on the new generation Pick n Pay store on the lower ground level, construction has also started on new mall that will link the two main malls of the Victoria Wharf, creating four additional shop fronts, as well as two additional shop-in-shops for Edgars. This extension will thus create space and bring exciting new brands to the Waterfront.

Kabalin says, ‘’this presents an exciting opportunity for us as we will shortly announce the new tenants for this space.’’

An advantage of new retailers arriving and the development work is that some retailers have taken the opportunity to rejuvenate their offering. Toy Kingdom will undergo a renovation and include Art Jamming on their upper level. Frank Fowden moved to a newly fitted out space in March, as did Accessorize. From a small pop-up store, Superdry is now a permanent tenant and development of their new store is underway.

What is there to say about THE VILLAGE, besides GEES (Major amounts of it I might add). The Village this year was set in a different location (good, bad, average, rocky – all of these were used to describe the Wildekrans Wine Estate (http://www.wildekrans.com), but more about that later. I for one have always been a fan of any Village party, so when I saw the line-up for this Village, it was a sure thing.

In recent times I have been making Sunday Missions (In the beginning I never understood why you would want to arrive halfway through a party just for the day) But 3 years down the line and I realise I have missed many hours of daytime fun from being beaten and broken from ‘going too hard’ during the night. My original plan was for the lady and I to sleep Saturday away, wake up at midnight or so, and attack the road to the village. This would have worked in theory, but waking up on Saturday morning I realised there was no way of me going back to sleep, I was just TOO AMPED. I changed the leaving time to 21:30, come about 18:00 I decided I couldn’t wait any longer and the road trip began (best decision ever).
Having never been to this venue, I had a fair idea of where it was (GOOGLE MAPS FTW), so the drive there was not a challenge at all. Arriving at the venue, we noted there were a good few cars arriving with us. We pulled down the windy dirty road to the gate, when I stopped the car to get tickets I immediately heard the distinct sounds of EMP clearly from the Gate. This just made me all the more excited. Hello’s, searches and ticket purchases finished, we completed the short drive from the gate to the parking lot. ‘Carry on Straight until the next guy with a flashlight’ I was told, well wasn’t that fun. We parked a good few rows down the line (not bothering to count the number on arrival), filled up drinks and decided to make our way directly to the dance floor. It was at this moment I decided to count the number of rows, as finding the car in the dark was going to be near impossible, ROW 17 it was.

Directly as you leave the car park was the Medic tents, right next to this was the 2nd stage. I will admit I don’t really see a point in playing a 2nd PSY floor, if there is going to be PSY playing on the main stage the entire time (Play alternative music on that floor the entire time, not some alternative and then PSY). Carrying on past the alternative tent, I noted a slight incline to my left with the campsite on my right (It was dark so I had no idea this was actually the DAM at this stage). We continued down the path, through the smell of amazing food straight to the main floor, and what a pretty slight it was. Coming off Vortex, I was not expecting to be blown away but I was immediately drawn to the beautiful colours and patterns surrounding the DJ booth.

By now EMP was in full swing and the party was definitely in full swing. It was during my first attempts at stomping that I noticed every 2nd or 3rd step, I was slipping and sliding and half twisting ankles. I looked down, rocks, to my left, rocks, to my right, rocks. Rocks EVERYWHERE. Now please don’t get me wrong, this is in in way a complaint, I couldn’t have cared if there was molten hot lava underneath my feet (when I say feet, I mean nicely comforted feet in amazing shoes). I heard a lot of people complaining about the rocks, WHO CARES? It’s the people complaining that don’t realise how hard it is for our event organisers to find us venues to use in Cape Town these days. With so many laws and by laws being enforced and the ever present POPO, the fact we have a venue to come and let ourselves get lost for the weekend is a win! (Rant over)

Following EMP was The RUBIX, and man oh man, this was the set that got my party started. Kieron is always a sight on the stage, and dropping bombs in his normal fashion (I was a bit sceptical about him being on this early, but that was a lost thought when he I realised who was following him up. I see the DJ booth now getting a little crowded, 3 gentlemen, legends of Cape Town Psytrance. None other than TWISTED SYSTEM. I must say I have never been a huge fan of TS, but was a given a treat. Watching the 3 of them do their thing was such an awesome sight and of course an audio delight.
By now my body had adjusted to the rocky floor, the drinks were flowing and the sound was definitely getting that little bit louder. Next up, was SKARAB. Owner and DJ for the Village, Phil always knows exactly what a crowd wants. I’m accustomed to seeing him play the final slot for Village parties, but this was treat, Big ups Phil. Night or day, this man is sure to keep the dance floor rocking.

It was towards the end of SKARABS set I decided to take a walk back to the car (let’s not forget row 17 I told myself.) it took me 3 tries, but on the 3rd try I remained focused for long enough to keep count to 17. The walk I realised was not that far and each time someone mentioned a long walk to the car I said “remember REMANUFACTURE? YEA I THOUGHT SO NOW SHUT UR FACE…”

Coming back to the dance floor I was greeted by the sounds of BIORYTHM, it was at this point I remembered the VS I was about to witness with none other than Replicant Records DJ GLACIAL. What a matchup this turned out to be. The Aussie sure knows a thing or 2 about PSY. The 3some took us on a journey and back. I took note of the length of sets being longer than the standard 1 hour we are used to, WELL DONE VILLAGE. This has been a topic of much conversation and debate recently but it seems longer sets are best, PERIOD!

Next up was EQLIPSE, Lauren you amazing, amazing person! This was when we went from a party to a full on RAVE! ALIENN VS WIRED, SINFUL REACTIONS just to name a few of the artists this DJANE was throwing our way, and boy oh boy was the dance floor responding, BIG DROPS and LOUD SHOUTS are my best way to describe this set. Well played Lauren, well played.

Next up, ZAK attack, or PSYQLOPZ as his DJ name would have you believe. I am a big fan of Zak, and big ups to VILLAGE for giving this man a sunrise set. I am a big fan of sunrise, and especially keeping the full on beats flowing into the early morning. SHADOW ZONE, HIYARANT and DIRTY MOTION made for a memorable sunrise. Even during his mixing he still managed to OWN a few people on the dance floor with quick changes and unexpected drops, nice one Zak.

Following him was ANESTETIC, having seen him at Groovy troopers and the previous Village, I took this time to adventure to the Damn (not that it was much of an adventure, the dam was a stone’s throw away from the Dance floor). Walking up the embankment I noticed a semi-full dam, but my,oh my was the view amazing. You had a 360 degree view of your surroundings and with Crunchy Morning beats raging through the massive rig, it was paradise.

Post ANESTETIC was SHIFT, and boy was I amped for a SHIFT type morning. Chris has been in the scene for long enough to know how and when to take it up a notch, and bring the crowd back to sanity just for long enough so we don’t all explode. Deliriant – Life Form (Shift Remix) was a highlight for me in the morning. This set seemed to be dragging for me, it may have been the excitement of what was to come the rest of the day, but let’s just blame it on Tequila shall we.

DIGITAL TALK was next up (1 half of DIGITAL TALK only, not that this made much of a difference). I’m always one for giving the internationals full respect, turn that rig LOUD, assemble all your friends and ‘GOOI MIELIES’. Well this is exactly what we did, and boy oh boy did he deliver. There was a point in the set I had to sit down for a few minutes, as I knew coming after this was the newly combined forces of DELIRIANT & MAD PIPER – TECHNICOLOR, this for me was the big talking point about this party.

I am a huge fan of both these gentlemen, and have always said they should combine forces, it would be a dance floor destroyer. Earlier in the week they released an interview and preview mix, and my,oh my did it tingle the taste buds. From the first track, that dance floor was insanity, melodic leads and drop after drop after drop, I just couldn’t get enough. Having heard Deliriant play WEYLAND at REMANUFACTURE, it was at the point I heard this coming in that I had a moment of clarity and reflection and just stood there in amazement and smiled to myself thinking, THIS IS THE LIFE. For a daytime set, this would have amazed any crowd anywhere in the world, SHANE and PETER, well played okes, well played. I know between me and my friend’s this was for sure the set of the party, and I look forward to seeing you guys play many, many, many more sets as TECHNICOLOR (WHEN IS THAT EP COMING OUT? WE WANT IT!)

It was after TECHNICOLOR had destroyed what was left of my body and raped my ears to the point of no return that we decided to head back to CT. I had a few people tell me in the days after the party that the COMMERCIAL HIPPIES played a ripper of a closing set, I expected nothing less from these legends.
In closing, I just want to say thank you to the VILLAGE for giving us another memorable party, and to each and every DJ I had the pleasure of partying to, keep doing what you doing. We really are lucky to be able to do this every week, week in and week out in Cape Town. Keep it real, and see you on the DF.

Taking place on the Freedom Day weekend, Utopia promises to put a new twist on one of South Africa’s favorite venues Nekkies, featuring the first full on Electronic ‘Oasis’ stage meters from the riverside.

Main Stage:

A one of a kind astonishing stage structure situated at the heart of the festival grounds, will feature SA’s top Live Performer

Fokofpolisiekar are known for their explosive live performances and raw on-stage energy.

Controversial and ever questioning in their lyrics as well as their lifestyle, the band has generated much controversy in the South African media. Fokofpolisiekar has become a household name.

Desmond & the Tutus formed in December 2005 and play an infectiously awesome blend of Rock ‘n Roll and Indie Kwela Pop. Energetic, tongue in cheek sings and a frantic live show make Desmond & the Tutus an unforgettable act.

Karen Zoid has become such an important part of the South African music scene, that her name is now the byword for emotionally charged, downright incendiary South African rock music.

Over a career that has last 10 years, Zoid has earned various accolades (including gold album sales) but she says that what continues to drive her is a deep-seated desire to create music that she can get up on stage and play live.

The Plastics began in 2007 as an evolution of the punk band Hoax. It’s now its own thing. Completely. Along with a cult following that tends to turn their sentences into acronyms and get the dance floor riled up, The Plastics set out to take over the world, or at least play some pretty damn good gigs along the way.

Mr Cat & The Jackal is a unique five piece multi-instrumental group often described as experimental acoustic folk whilst exploring blues, tango, pirate, Balkan and Irish themes. With a circus of sounds created by foreign and handmade instruments – their live performance calls for a complete theatrical experience.

Stay tuned to find out what other acts will be performing at Main Stage during the festival.

Oasis Stage:

On a stomping ground of soft sand, meters from the beautiful riverside this electronic stage brings the best in Deep House and Techno.

Dean FUEL’s distinctive musical style is versatile, and uniquely his own – fusing an intercontinental blend of Minimal, Funk, House, Techno, Electro, Progressive & Trance – the FUEL adds that something special, igniting all dance floors and keeping them burning with his passion and infectious energy delivered through the turntables – ALL ATTITUDE.

Chris Jack’s selection and range of music is endless. Age race and gender is not seen in a crowd when Mr. Jack is in control of the decks. This is where his true ability of giving the crowd what they want makes Chris such an entertainer.

When it comes to genre its Tech House, Techno and Progressive House that pump’s through the audio waves.

James Copeland has been making electronic music professionally for over 8 years – most successfully with his psytrance project Broken Toy, with which he has released 2 albums and toured over 20 countries. In yet another fit of musical hyperactivity, he felt the need to move away from synthetic and “cyber” sounding music and make some tunes focused on vintage tones and slightly more tropical flavours. The result is jazz-infused tech house and cheeky basslines moving from double time swing through to sultry burlesque beats.

Oasis stage additional acts to be revealed.

The Rustum August ‘Eat Life’ Comedy Stage:

Once upon a time there was a cool guy with really short jokes and a great attitude. “Eat Life,” he said- and so we shall.

Cape Town’s Top cutting-edge Comedians, the Starving Comics, a large dose of Cape Town’s

5-minute wonders and you. You lucky Fish!

This stage will run throughout the day with regular shows, a tweet activated billboard (#eatlife) and an opportunity for everyone to join in the fun.

Go ‘Bos’ Stage:

Nestled in our camping area and playing host to some awesome up and coming musicians- The Go ‘Bos’ stage will also give festival goers the chance to show people what they are made of. Bring an instrument, your band, or even create a band there and then. All you have to do is book a slot and the stage is yours!

DATE: SATURDAY, MAY 4, 2013
TIME: 10:00AM
PLACE: CNR OF KEIZERGRACHT & CHAPEL ST,
(NEXT TO CAPE TECHNIKON), CAPE TOWN
On Saturday, May the 4th, a diverse group of South Africans who support the re-legalisation of the Cannabis plant will gather in Cape Town for the annual Global Cannabis March to celebrate global unity and support for the Cannabis plant’s re-integration into our society.

This is the only African event which coincides with 125 cities from 25 nations around the world.

There is growing awareness among global and South African citizens, that the drug war propaganda against the Cannabis plant and its consumers is not scientifically based; does not justify criminalisation; is at its roots racist; and promotes profits in many organised crime sectors within our own economy.

Marchers are seeking to claim equal rights to adult users of alcohol and tobacco who may freely produce, consume and trade these products
responsibly without fear of criminal prosecution.

Citizens will meet at the corner of Keizersgracht and Chapel Street, Cape Town, at 10am on May the 4th for a Festive Walk through the streets of Cape Town.

There have been global winds of change regarding Cannabis. Prohibition started here first. Let’s end it here!

Blue Route Mall Concept Store

This season, Shoe HQ launched their incredibly on-trend range of ankle & full length boots. Everything from cowboy to riders to all things embellished. Making them your one stop online shop, as well as the most visited destination store(s) in the Western Cape, with one in Stamford, Durban.

You can find them in Blue Route Mall, Ottery, Long Street, Cavendish Connect, Salt River, Stamford (KZN) and let’s not forget, online at www.shoehq.co.za

Not only do Shoe HQ offer a wide variety at great value, their shoes (and bags) are incredibly fashionable and of great quality.

When asked about the business Chris is quick to explain that he believes Shoe HQ’s success lies in their ability to source the latest ladies and men’s footwear directly from overseas factories. The Shoe HQ customer is getting the same quality product as can be found in major fashion chain stores & retail outlets without having to pay chain store prices. In addition most of the shoes and boots they stock are unique to Shoe HQ and they are introducing new styles all the time to keep their range interesting and fresh for the customer.

Christa Zietsman, Buyer at Shoe HQ says the ankle boot is the big fashion statement this winter. The military look is in with lace up boots and the classic rider. The ever popular Cowboy Boot remains in fashion this season with the introduction of a new stylish higher ankle boot. The pattern madness of summer has been extended to winter and can be found in bright coloured ankle boots, flatforms & colourful pumps. This season’s footwear has something for everyone says Christa. “We find ladies are comfortable trying on our winter boots as we have had them manufactured to our specifications not an overseas fit which can often be quite different” she added.

Shoe HQ started their online store in December. Chris says he is delighted with how and online store is going. “Our online store provides an opportunity for customers who do not have easy access to one of our stores to still buy our footwear. We are getting orders from all over South Africa”. “Online shopping is a worldwide reality and here to stay so it is something we intend to focus on & develop going forward”.
